Dear Family and Friends,
We are so grateful for your friendship, love, and support through the first year of our marriage. God has been amazing to us this past year and has provided for us abundantly in every aspect of our lives. In keeping with our desire to be a Christ-centered family and to serve God together, we have decided to go on a short-term missionary trip to an orphanage in Mexico, Pilar De Esperanza (Pillar of Hope), from March 25-31st, 2012. |
The orphanage is located near the town of Reynosa, just south of McAllen, TX. There are around 30 children that are without parents or left at the orphanage due to financial reasons. The children’s diet lack protein and consists mostly of baked goods donated by local bakeries. They have plenty of land that could be used for growing vegetables and raising livestock but they do not have the tools or knowledge to do so. There are also many companion animals on site with the children that the orphanage has no means of providing veterinary care for.
|
On this trip we will provide veterinary care to the animals at the orphanage. We will also help build chicken coops so the children can raise their own chickens and supplement their diet with additional protein sources such as eggs. We would also like to help with a pig-raising program and a vegetable garden to further assist the orphanage in becoming more self-sustaining. Through serving and relationship-building we hope to be witnesses for Christ and share with the children the love and faith that we have in Him.

For David, witnessing and serving God has aways been something that he has the desire to do but haven’t had the opportunity to put into action. Through many encouragements of friends, family, and Jean, he is taking a step to learn to put others first, and hopes through prayer he can learn to serve, love and submit. Other than the construction needs, he is also looking forward to being the big kid that he is and play with the kids.
This trip will be the second one for Jean with VetMerge. The first trip opened her eyes to how God is able to use veterinary medicine to help people as well as animals. This time around she is looking forward to participating as a veterinarian and doing lots of surgeries and testing out her farm animal husbandry skills. Jean is also excited to serve God as a couple with David.
Our team of 7 consists of veterinarians, vet and pre-vet students, and support members. We know that we cannot do this with our small team alone so we need you to become a part of our team through financial donations and prayers. If you are in the veterinary field you can also support us by donating veterinary supplies.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. Your prayer and support will not only equip us but will greatly encourage us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Blessings,
David and Jean Cheng
